Shaolin: the Cradle of Kungfu and the Origin of Zen

As a Chinese poem said “Deep in a mountain hides an ancient temple, around a green creek lies a Shaolin Monastery”, Songshan Shaolin Monastery, a world famous Zen Buddhist home, located in the forests at the foot of Shaoshi Mountain, is favored both by the natural surrounding among which any glimpse could be compared to a magnificent painting, continuous mountains and tranquil forests, and by the long, more than 1,500 years, cultural history during which certain origins of Chinese traditions can be traced. Unlike other schools of martial arts, Shaolin Kungfu emphasizes that “Zen and Martial shares the same origin and have the same goal”, believing that the unique aim of exercising Kungfu is to reshape or, at least improve one’s disposition. Shaolin kungfu incorporates Zen spirit into martial arts, cultivating the wisdom of one’s body and mind and mediating while exercising in order to get rid of aggressiveness and free from disturbance in the world. Shaolin warrior monks exercise in peaceful minds in this secluded and quiet environment so that they can avoid being distracted by external secularity, manage to practice self-protection skills as well as enjoy the mind purification at the same time.          

Dengfeng Shaolin Warrior Monks School follows the doctrine of Zen Buddhism that the bodhisattva beings help the people decreeing by destiny to work out their liberation, having broken down old conventions that Shaolin Kungfu was only passed on to monks. Not sticking to one pattern, the school continues the old tradition that comprehensively assesses students’ abilities. Each master only teaches 8-15 students. They do not only instruct in words but also in actions attentively. Students will be taught and cultivated according to their aptitude and interests. The school chooses students and grants graduation in a very strict way. Those who do not meet the graduation criteria cannot graduate and will not be granted by the qualification certificate. The unique cultivation environment in remote mountains and dense forest keeps the noisy of cities away, making it an excellent drill place.

Under the school, there are Shaolin Warrior Monks Training Base, Shaolin Kungfu Special Training Department, Shaolin Overseas Students Advance Centre and Shaolin Martial Monks Performance Group. Now the enrolled student number exceeds 15000. The school covers a total area of 99,900 square meters. The construction area takes nearly 49,200 square meters, among which teaching department accounts for 9,600 square meters, specialized training halls 2,000, office department 19,000, students Canteens 10,000, student accommodation 28,000 and shower rooms 2000. Other facilities like multi-media classrooms, language labs, and biological physicochemistry labs, computer centers and libraries are also available.

Retrospectively, 3000 international students, who came from more than 50 countries and districts, such as USA, Great Britain, France, Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, etc, have successfully graduated from Dengfeng Shaolin Warrior Monks School. As a successful carrier of Shaolin Zen martial arts culture, our school has proudly achieved great achievements in the Chinese and foreign cultural exchange. As a result, our school has aroused increasingly interest not only of scholars but of all walks of life.
